Creative process: Motel illustration contest
I just thought I would share the creative process behind my Motel illustration contest entries. Initially I sketched out my ideas and then scanned them to get an idea of what colours schemes I wanted to use. Then I sketched out my designs and copied them in a thin black liner. I then scanned these into my computer and started the
One: The first design in the pink and black aztec dress. The background is an array of blue sequins from a local craft shop. I scanned them into the computer and they placed the around the image to create the illusion of rain. I think this one is my favourite.
Two: The second is a simple line drawing. I refrained from using colour on the hair and background to keep the photographic feel and only used colour on the POW jumper to make it stand out.
Three: The third is a peace dress and I wanted to create a hippy sort of vibe. The flowers in the background and the one attached to her hair are made from crete paper and have been scanned into the computer. I then placed the image on top.
Four: The fourth has been designed in the idea of a heart playing card (I hope this is obvious) as I drew the red heart jumper. I scanned in a real pack of cards but the placing was all wrong and something didn't quite feel right so I decided to scan in a heart cut out from paper and create the cards myself on the computer.
Five: This one is my second fav. The fourth has a tropical vibe going on. Bright, bold and standing out. I love the idea of using the pineapples on the floor so I decided to make her hold one over her face too. I think the red bodice and peach palm pants work really well together. Holiday outfit maybe?
Six: The sixth one is a letter dress. I painted strips of newspaper and then mounted them on top of each other to create this effect. The letters on the dress gave me the library chic feeling, hence the book and ponytail. Haha.
I have really enjoyed looking at all the other entries and fingers crossed people like mine too.

Motel Rocks Illustration competition
Even though I haven't yet fully got my blog going I thought I would share that I decided to take part in the motel rocks illustration competition because it sounds like a good opportunity to start showcasing my work. I love to draw, edit and play around with compositions and although I am aware my illustrations are not the typical fashion illustrations I thought I would give it a go anyway. These are my sketches and pen drawings so far. I am going to play around with backgrounds over the next couple of days and then I will post my final illustrations up some time this week.
I have seen some of the other entries and WOW they are good. Everyone had different styles and ideas of how to put together the motel rocks pieces. If you have entered or are planning to enter please leave your links below as I love to see the other entries.
Here is my progress so far...

The C in Plan C stands for...
The C in Plan C stands for 4 things in particular...
1. C is for Creativity - As you can see my blog doesn't consist of OOTD posts or beauty hauls. Instead my focus is on being creative. Don't get me wrong I have followed many beauty, fashion, crafty blogs over the year and I still do. I enjoy reading all types of blogs - but for me personally I wan't to showcase my creative skills. My writing, my illustration and my photomontage moodboards.
2. C is for Column - I want this blog to be a daily read. A little column type thingy.

3. C is for the magazine I aspire to work for one day.
4. C is for Creating opportunities - I am using this blog as a creative outlet and a writing portfolio. Considering my current background in online journalism and my future aspirations to work in a web journalism/digital media setting I hope this blog can create opportunities for me.

Time for Plan C...

Time for plan c is a blog about following your dreams.
I have many dreams and goals in life but one goal that I have been pursuing for a long time is my dream to work in the magazine industry. This is my long time passion and I have been actively seeking a career in this industry for a long time now.
So why I am starting this blog?
Having interned at many great magazines and digital media companies I was lucky enough to get my break into web journalism last year, at a great website. Through this role I learnt the importance of keeping your creative spirit alive - even when you have to write about something that you have absolute no interest in. This is when I realised... although I am now getting paid to write (a big step on the ladder to my dream job), I haven't yet achieved my goal.
When searching the web over and over again for ways to break into the magazine industry, how to write the perfect cover letter, the do's and dont's of CV's ect. I realised one vital thing I was missing. A digital portfolio, a platform for my writing...basically a BLOG.
Being an avid fan of blogs for a very long time, I have on numerous occasions contemplated starting my own blog - but something has always held me back. I don't know what it was but I never felt like I was ready to start my own blog and have time to update and nurture it like a blogger should do.
So what changed?
The world of online journalism is one that is thriving, but there are many limited jobs in this area.
So I asked myself...
Do you want to reach your goal? And my answer was yes.
Do you want to write about things that interest you? Again, my answer was yes.
Do you want a career in the Magazine Industry? Well, this was a no brainer.
Well then I MUST start a blog.
So here it is, TIME FOR PLAN C - a column type blog thingy. A writing platform, a place to showcase my drawings and a general creative space for me to communicate with other blog fans and maybe even writers/journalists/creative types on the path to fulfilling their goals in life.

If Plan A doesn't work, stay cool! - The alphabet has 25 more letters!
You must be wondering how I got from A - C and what my 'Plan A' was exactly.
Well...
Plan A - Build a time machine and go back to Ancient Egypt and live like an Egyptian! Strange I know, but this was my Plan A when I was younger. :)
Plan B - Follow in the steps of Tim Burton and make stop-motion animation movies. Long shot I know, but I have been obsessed with movie making since I was little and still am.
I am not saying I have given up on achieving Plan B I just have a clearer goal in mind now. My Plan C, which is actually now my Plan A is to work at a Magazine. Although it may seem this is a second, or in this case third choice - it's not. For the sake of this blog I am calling it Plan C because C stands for so many things. Read my next blog post to find out what the C in Plan C stands for.
Thanks for reading... x
