Creative process: Motel illustration contest

I just thought I would share the creative process behind my Motel illustration contest entries. Initially I sketched out my ideas and then scanned them to get an idea of what colours schemes I wanted to use. Then I sketched out my designs and copied them in a thin black liner. I then scanned these into my computer and started the

One: The first design in the pink and black aztec dress. The background is an array of blue sequins from a local craft shop. I scanned them into the computer and they placed the around the image to create the illusion of rain. I think this one is my favourite.

Two: The second is a simple line drawing. I refrained from using colour on the hair and background to keep the photographic feel and only used colour on the POW jumper to make it stand out.

Three: The third is a peace dress and I wanted to create a hippy sort of vibe. The flowers in the background and the one attached to her hair are made from crete paper and have been scanned into the computer. I then placed the image on top.

Four: The fourth has been designed in the idea of a heart playing card (I hope this is obvious) as I drew the red heart jumper. I scanned in a real pack of cards but the placing was all wrong and something didn't quite feel right so I decided to scan in a heart cut out from paper and create the cards myself on the computer.

Five: This one is my second fav. The fourth has a tropical vibe going on. Bright, bold and standing out. I love the idea of using the pineapples on the floor so I decided to make her hold one over her face too. I think the red bodice and peach palm pants work really well together. Holiday outfit maybe?

Six: The sixth one is a letter dress. I painted strips of newspaper and then mounted them on top of each other to create this effect. The letters on the dress gave me the library chic feeling, hence the book and ponytail. Haha.

I have really enjoyed looking at all the other entries and fingers crossed people like mine too.
